Absorbent Booms Only Part of the Solution for BP Oil Spill

The BP oil spill is a story that gets worse by the minute. Oil is already starting to come on shore and turning lovely white beach sand into a black, muck-filled hazard area. This is a tragedy to watch, but we are not helpless. Integrated Protection Systems (IPS) is doing something about it and has a way of providing protection for the beaches from the oil spill. By using HESCO® Concertainer® Units, you can have a huge advantage over the oil spill. Our clean up methods include the Enviro-Armour, which will transform oil into a floating solid once it comes into contact with the units. We also include this in with the absorbent booms we place strategically along the coast. The units provide a wonderful beach barrier that will prevent the beaches from turning into wastelands. Our preferred installers, Sterling Building Specialists (SBS), can place them in with no problem.

The HESCO® Concertainer® unit is a patented framework that has geotextile lining and a cellular structure that is strong enough to prevent oil from destroying your beach. The product is pre-assembled and delivered flat and can be joined together to create a barrier of individual units. It has a stable core with a pyramid design of three rows stacked on top of one another. With SBS using their custom-made sand blower, the units can be installed within 20 minutes with only two people. A job similar to this using 1,500 sandbags can take seven hours and 10 people to do. With time being of the essence, anything that can be done quickly to prevent the destruction of the Gulf’s beaches is important. Absorbent booms can help, but with the HESCO® units in place, there is definitely a strong wall of protection around the beaches.

There are other benefits to having the HESCO® units installed. They do not cost a lot, they can be used for many project applications, their construction is durable, and they can help protect against floods and beach erosion. This along with our absorbent booms can put a stop to the oil slick. With the Enviro-Armour added to the basket units and our absorbent booms, the oil can be transformed into a reusable product. The agent is a dry, granular powder that is blended to encapsulate the oil by transforming it into a cohesive rubber material that can be recycled into asphalt, rubber, plastic or fuel. Absorbent booms are the first line of defense for the oil spill and the HESCO® units are a secondary defense. Both together will work against the BP oil spill.

Absorbent Booms Soaking Up Oil from BP Spill

[Posted on Aug. 18]

The use of absorbent booms during an oil spill is a common thing to see in such situations. They are placed along shorelines in hopes of containing any oil that is floating on top of the water. They absorb oil as it comes into contact with the floating boom and then it is removed at a different location. The boom is then cleaned and reused again. The booms can be designed for use in either calm or rough waters and can be UV resistant as well. This is good considering that they will probably be in the water for a long period of time. Also, there is no need to worry about the booms becoming saturated with water. They are designed to repel water and only absorb the hydrocarbon spill.

The absorbent booms have a polypropylene filler absorbs hydrocarbon spills such as oil and they are held in place with a mesh outer skin. They can be linked together like sausage and placed near the spill and can be moved in order to allow shipping lanes to remain free and open. Stringing the absorbent booms together makes them more stable and easier to retrieve once the job is done.

Sometimes you can add an agent to the booms, which makes them a more effective tool against oil spills, like the BP oil spills. An agent such as Enviro Bond 403™ can work great in conjunction with the absorbent booms. Once the oil comes into contact with the agent, it is encapsulated through the transformation of it from a liquid into a solid. It becomes a solid mass of rubberish material that can be retrieved from the water easier than a liquid. Also, the solid oil is then taken back to shore and recycled as a raw material. Then it can be used for useful products such as:

  • Plastic
  • Rubber
  • Asphalt
  • Fuel

Using absorbent booms in oil spills is nothing new. They were used in the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska in 1989 and other chemical and oil spills around the world. Deploying them for the Gulf oil spill is something several oil spill cleanup companies are doing and it is having some effect. Integrated Protection Systems (IPS) is using absorbent booms as well as HESCO® Concertainers® units in the oil spill battle and with some success.
